The current Constitution of the State of Illinois dates from 1970. It is the fourth constitution in the state’s history. It is notable for introducing the concept of “home rule” to Illinois — the ability for local governments to act more autonomously from state government.
The document opens with a preamble that clearly echoes the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, coupled with some 20th-century values:
“We, the People of the State of Illinois — grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberty which He has permitted us to enjoy and seeking His blessing upon our endeavors — in order to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the people; maintain a representative and orderly government; eliminate poverty and inequality; assure legal, social and economic justice; provide opportunity for the fullest development of the individual; insure domestic tranquility; provide for the common defense; and secure the blessings of freedom and liberty to ourselves and our posterity — do ordain and establish this Constitution for the State of Illinois.”
This is followed by a detailed bill of rights. Many of the rights guaranteed in article I of the Illinois constitution reflect those protected in the federal Bill of Rights, but the Illinois version goes further, including a guarantee of rights for victims of crime; prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex or disability; and, the most recent addition, added in 2022, protecting workers’ rights.
The other thirteen articles in the state constitution cover the three branches of government, legislative, executive, and judicial; elections and voting rights and eligibility; finance and revenue; local government; and education and the environment, among other topics.
Since the constitution’s approval by voters in December 1970, the document has been amended 15 times, most recently in 2022 as of this writing. These changes are reflected in the text, with a note at the beginning of affected sections stating that they were amended and the date voters approved the amendment.
The print is available in two sizes, 24 by 36 inches and 30 by 40 inches. Note that due to the length of the text the 24- by -36-inch version is delivered in two prints. Both prints feature the complete text, including the article and section headers officially published with the Illinois State Constitution, as well as stylized details of the seal and flag of Illinois.

Prints are not framed
Please note that, to keep my costs low and to pass those savings on to you, prints are not framed. All prints are shipped rolled in sturdy shipping tubes.

Not all the items I ordered arrived in the package I received. Where is the rest of my order?
Please note that, because of the various production techniques I use, some orders may arrive in two or more separate packages. You will receive tracking information for each package when it ships.
I purchased the digital version of one of your prints by accident. Can I get a refund?
Yes — as long as you haven’t downloaded it yet (and yes, I can see on my end whether you’ve downloaded it or not). If you’ve purchased the digital version by accident, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT and let me know of the error. We’ll make it right through a refund or exchange, or by figuring out another solution. But once you download the PDF, your purchase can’t be refunded, because there’s no reliable way for me to verify that you’ve deleted the downloaded file from your computer or other storage devices.
